RUU RN Bisa Pidana Wartawan

Arfi Bambani Amri - detikcom

Suciwati: “I will continue to demand for accountability

THE death of Munir Said Thalib has not quite been understood and accepted by 8-year-old Alif Allende and his 4-year-old sister, Diva Suukyi. One night, they both woke up and cried. “I miss Abah,” sobbed Alif. Abah is how siblings Alif and Diva refer to their father, the late Munir, who was killed by poisoning on September 7, 2004. The human rights activist died en route to the Netherlands on a Garuda Indonesia flight. Two years have gone by but Munir’s death remains shrouded in mystery. A number of names ended up as suspects but the real people behind this abominable deed are still free. This enfuriates Suciwati, 38, Munir’s widow, and is what keeps her campaign for the truth.

Kuntoro Mangkusubroto: I must clean up the black spot

INDONESIA Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Aceh Anticorruption Movement (Gerak) suspect there was corruption in the procurement of books by the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Agency (BRR). Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, its chairman, is totally shocked. “It feels like cold water being poured on me, but we accept it and strive to improve ourselves,” he commented on the bad news to Tempo reporters L.R. Baskoro and Abdul Manan, who met him before a seminar in Jakarta last Friday. Excerpts of the interview:
The Aceh prosecution service is investigating a possible case of corruption in the book project at your place...
To be honest, I feel sad and concerned. If the charges are true, I am very shocked. The project has no direct relations with reconstruction, like building a house and so forth. We ask that the prosecution go ahead with its investigation. Our commitment is clear: there can be no manipulation or corruption in any of the sectors.
Has the anticorruption unit made its own inves…

Kuntoro Mangkusubroto: Titik Hitam Mesti Saya Bersihkan

Kena Getah Jyllands Posten

”Sepekan setelah kedatangan FPI, tabloid kami tutup,” ujar…

Saying ‘Sorry’ is Not Enough

The chief editor of Rakyat Merdeka Online is tried for publishing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad.

A POSTER was brandished high in the grounds of the South Jakarta District Court. Screaming “Use the Press, Not KUHP,” the poster was brought by reporters belonging to the Alliance Rejecting Press Criminalization. Dozens of posters also decorated the first trial of Teguh Santosa, chief editor of Rakyat Merdeka Online.

Teguh was charged with insulting religion because the media that he managed published one of the infamous 12 cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad on February 2.

Rakyat Merdeka Online extracted it from Danish daily Jyllands Posten which published the cartoons in its September 30, 2005 edition. Prosecutor Firmansyah charged the person responsible for the media belonging to the Jawa Pos group with violating Article 156 on religious slur. Violators can be sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Tripped by Jyllands Posten

THE building on 7x9 square meters of land on Jalan KH Noer Ali, Bekasi, has changed names. In thepast the building had a sign with “Peta” written on it. Today, it’s been replaced by “Niaga Bisnis.”“The Peta tabloid has closed down its business,” said Billy Rumengan, former reporter of thetabloid. Today, he’s the deputy chief of the Niaga Bisnis tabloid.

Peta is one of the three Indonesian mass media to publish the Prophet Mohammad cartoon ran by Danish daily Jyllands Posten. The cartoon was published in its February 6, 2006 edition, with a circulation of around 2,000 copies. Hundreds of people from the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) came to Peta’s office. They demanded the tabloid be withdrawn and its management apologize.

The requests were met. However, FPI still processed the case to the police. Editor in Chief of Peta, Wahab Adi, and Operational Manager Cepi Ganjar Gumiwang were summoned by the police. Since then the two have been going back and forth, for interrogation. The tabloid ra…
