Suciwati to Meet British Parliamentarians to Discuss the Munir Case

Thursday, 11 November, 2010 | 13:07 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, London: Suciwati, the wife of human right activist, Munir, who died of poisoning, is scheduled to meet with members of the British parliament in Westminster, London. This is part of the Action Committee for Munir Solidarity’s agenda in the UK.

Before going to parliament, Suciwati also gave a public lecture titled "The Munir Memorial Lecture" in London, last Tuesday (November 9). The event was held by The College of Law, London, and was attended by over 100 law students.

In the lecture, Suciwati explained about the campaigns she was carrying out to seek justice over her husband’s murder. She mentioned that her efforts are also intended for all human rights activists who have suffered a similar fate.

Suciwati described the status of the legal case against her husband’s murderer as “pawned justice.” Given the situation of Munir’s case so far, she feels that the collaboration between Indonesia and the European Union failed to make the defense human rights as one of its conditions.

Munir died during his flight to Amsterdam on September 7, 2004. The founder of the Commission for Missing Persons & Victims of Violence (Kontras) died two hours before the plane landed at Schipol, Amsterdam.

Besides Suciwati, Rafendi Djamin was also one of the speakers in the public lecture. He represented Indonesia for the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights. He explained about the human rights commission founded by ASEAN members. Rafendi is also scheduled to meet with British parliamentarians as well.

To Antara’s correspondent in London, Rafendi said he was invited to the UK by Article 19, a human rights advocacy organization that is actively campaigning and advocating for freedom of expression and the media. The public lecture is to remember Munir’s case, which is believed remains unsolved.
